Old Hunting Memories & Stories of the Years Past.

Fishing Creek at Center Post. Pulaski County, Kentucky.

So many times I have been to this creek during and after the 3 years at the one room school Center Post. I remember a couple of times this creek got up in the road and nearly in the school house after a hard heavy spring rain. Many of a time the rain raised the creek to the edge of the road and that was frightening as a child to see this. The well here went dry and we went up the road to a house by the church house to get water a 1/2 mile or so. However this was an outing and a break for two kids to go there to get water. Lonnie New and myself went one day to get water we let the bucket and rope fall into the well .............WELL !!!!!!!!!! We did not go back without water we got it from the creek and forgot to tell what we had done. The old well had a hinged top on it that raised up to get to the bucket. Chester West and Carthel Barber went to get water once and the top fell on Chester's head poking a hole in his head from a nail that was sticking through the top. He was bleeding like a stuck hog we all thought sure he would die.

Changing from a one room school at center post to the new Hogue Elementary. Some of you folks went to a one room school no doubt and never attended a more modern school. As a youngster this was a big deal to change from less modern to more modern than you had ever seen or heard of. Such things as inside plumbing inside toilet, water from a cooler water fountain, kitchen, lunch room. electricity , inside steam heat. We had electric at home but no bath room or running water other than in the creek. I actually was afraid of the bathroom and used an outside toilet that was out by the base ball field..............yea thats right a base ball field talk about up town we had it. Also there was a basketball court outside with concrete floor now that was something that ball sure did bounce good on that hard floor. This is where I learned the game of Basketball and became a good player back in the day . Until this school I had not seen a basketball goal or a real basketball and I loved the game. The first basketball ever I had in my hand was at the Irvine's that Gary had........... it was the lace up type and he had a goal made from a bicycle rim with all the spokes cut out it hang on the front of the smoke house....Some folks can only talk of country living but I have lived it seen poor lived poor day after day. We always ate well had meat in the smoke house can food in the cellar and had clean clothes to wear and a loving family and neighbors and friends...Thank you LORD for being so good to us ..........

Center Post School Book Moblie , Bible School Teacher .............I can recall the book mobile library on wheels that came once a month with great books and how we use to love to go out to this vehicle to check out books . The smell of the paper of the books was a most comforting smell and geting to browse through this book selection was a treat that we all enjoyed ...Bible School teacher Mrs Whitis would come each month with an interesting story . She displayed her bible characters on a rather large 4 x 4 display that sit on a rack up about head high the characters would stick to this material and she used the characters to tell bible stories . At Xmas time it was a most wonderful time to see her come she was an exciting story teller and could hold your interest with her sincere sweet voice . What a great memory.

Since I am on the school at Center Post when I was in the third grade my last year of one room school education and remembering a lot of students one of them being Billy Wilson Coy Wison's son. Billy rode a bicycle to Center Post from Wlson Ridge more than likely the first bicyle that ever traveled on the creek road from Wilson Ridge to Center Post . At this time the grade Billy was in the students had to write a short story and read it to the class of all 8 grades lol lol lol . A few had read stories and it came to Master Mind Wilson's turn he approached the front of the school builing with a sheppish smile to begin his great story of excellence and time consuming master piece of all short stories...Billy looked the crowd over looked at the teacher and read this short story to us..............I TELL YOU A STORY ITS NOT VERY LONG HERE IT IS AND NOW ITS GONE.....Laughter filled the school building as if this was the most funniest thing we had ever heard Lorenza Carter our teacher not cracking a smile said...........Wilson come here young man...............he had Billy hold out his hand turned his palm up smacked it several quick times with a yard stick.....Now Carter says to Wilson is that funny.............Billy smiling and just about laughing out loud said to the teacher.........YESSSSSSS .......Carter put him in the corner standing on his toes with his nose in a circle .........

A scene so beautiful but so cold that one would think this water would be frozen. However it would have been had it not been a flowing sream. Scenes like this make me want to live forever to enjoy them all I can. Yes I am a nature lover and us country folks I consider close to nature as any type person can get. I think some folks think they are country because they like country music. I DON'T THINK SO.

A vehicle of this type would have been handy back in the day when we were growing up over there on Rocklick Creek. The only way out was up and very few had a car of any dependabilty for the engine to start on a cold day much less chains to put on the tires for traction we had several different vehicles and of course at different times I remember pap had the following vehicles Plymouth, Kaiser, Chevrolet, Ford, Desota. We had a 1956 ford that would get down the road with and Pap ran it pretty hard most of the time. Getting to the grocery store (old country store to do your trading) was a big dam deal when snow and or ice covered the roads. Like I said before we had to go up hill to get out snow was bad to drift up high in the roads in certain spots. One day as Pap and I had managed to get to the top of the Vaught Ridge hill we just knew we had it made to get to Mintonville for a few supplies. As we rounded the curve just beyond Foger Irvines place a large snow drift was in sight. Pap said I will get a running shoot at that and we will get through it ok. Well Pap put the old ford in secon gear getting up as much speed as possible swaying back and forth on the road from one ditch to the other and wam hit that snow drift real hard. The car stopped so suddenly like running into a sand pile we were stuck. Well s......... he said then said we will have to dig it out. We get out of the car and me wondering what tool were we going to use to dig out with then he tells me to go down the road and borrow a shovel from someone off I go into the snow set lol lol cold wind blowing. I think it was Fogger Irvine that loaned me a shovel a large scoop shovel for use of shoveling corn with. We dug the car free and needed that shovel two morre times before getting it back to Fogger.
