Rice, son of John and Clarinda (Muse) Ware, grew up in a Christian home. John lived most of his life in Casey County. In his later years he moved to Pulaski County. He was choir leader for a number of years at Bunkam Baptist Church, Pulaski County. The name of the song book he used was " Missouri Harmony". John's final resting place is in (old) Bunkam Cemetery.

Rice was seventeen years old when he volunteered for service in the Army of the Federal Government and served as a Union soldier for the last years of the Civil War. On March 3, 1868 Rice married Nancy Gadberry. They had two children, Laura and John Cambell Ware. After the death of his wife, Nancy, Rice married Telitha Haggard from Shermanville, Ky. located near fishing creek (Bethelridge and Science Hill Road). The marriage took place at the home of Jackson Haggard, December 18, 1874.

Rice married Lizzie Albertson in 1914. They later moved to Science Hill, Ky. In their later years they spent their winters in Palm Beach, Florida, returning to their Kentucky home in the Spring. Rice died January 1927 and is buried at Somerset Ky, Cemetery.
