This "Red River Special" thrashing machine was used until the 1930's. The logs in the foreground are burned in the engine to make steam power. In some communities farmers formed a ring, the number of men depending on the type thrasher. The men donated or traded their labor as they harvested from farm to farm. Some help was hired and paid good wages ranging from .50 to $5.00 a day Ten to twelve hours was an average day. The wives also exchanged labor to prepare and serve dinner for the crew. The meals were super delicious, and plenty of it. Some foremen instructed the men to pile up their plates when the food was passed, with no second helpings, eat, and get back to work. One man cut the wheat with a scythe-cradle, another followed, bundled, and tied the wheat, shocked it in the field to dryout a week or two.

A wagon and team of horses or mules hauled the shocks of wheat from the field to the thrasher to separate the grain and straw. (Straw stack shown in the picture). Straw-bed mattresses were used in some Casey County homes.

He later moved to Stearns, Ky. where he was the doctor for Stearns Coal and Lumber Company employees. He once owned the house pictured page 63. Dr. T. Ralston whose office was on Oak Hill Ridge, was the community doctor during the 1920's and 1930's. Both doctors traveled by horseback.

Mrs. Cora Hodge (picture above) wife of Lee Hodge, Ware Ky. was a registered mid wife. She delivered hundreds of babies in nearby communities. There were times she stayed with the expectant mothers as long as 24 to 36 hours before delivery. Cora, a kind and vibrant lady and mother, was a shouting Methodist, and loved by every one.
