Shelby Martin Family

Shelby Martin was born February 8, 1839 and died November 10, 1918. He was married twice. His first wife was Celia Walker Martin. Their children were William Perry, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Wolford, Jerry, Harvy, Dock, Janie, Mary, and Lizzie. His second wife's name was Rebecca Jones Martin. She and Shelby, who lived in Wayne County, Kentucky, desired better farmland; found and purchased a farm on Rock-Lick Creek near Watson's Chapel, in Casey County. He left Wayne County March 5, 1878 and arrived at his Casey County home late the following Saturday. The moving procession consisted of a double-ox team one horse, some cattle, sheep, and fat hogs, himself, wife, ten sons and one daughter. Shelby's religious beliefs were Baptist; and there being no Baptist Church in the community, he invited his friends to hold services in his home. On Sept. 18, 1880 with seventeen charter members, the Valley Oak Baptist Church was constituted. Shelby was ordained as one of the Deacons. Shelby heard of a farm that was for sale at Ritner, Wayne County, Ky. Before moving to Casey County, he had desired owning this land very much, and with pleasure he purchased it, and returned to his native county. During his stay of seven years in Casey County, his three oldest sons married and remained in their adopted county.

As a young girl, she challenged boys her age, many times, for a horse race, and won. When Betty was nine years old in 1869, her father, John Green Watson, wife, two sons, George and Silas, plus two other families went to Missouri in a covered wagon caravan.
